They will ask you about Dhu'l-Qarnayn. Say, "I will give you an account of him." 83 Behold, We established him securely on earth, and endowed him with [the knowledge of] the right means to achieve anything [that he might set out to achieve]; 84 And he followed a road 85 Until, when he reached the setting place of the sun, he found it setting in a spring of black muddy (or hot) water. And he found near it a people. We (Allah) said (by inspiration): "O Dhul-Qarnain! Either you punish them, or treat them with kindness." 86 He said: As to him who is unjust, we will chastise him, then shall he be returned to his Lord, and He will chastise him with an exemplary chastisement: 87 But he who believes and does the right will have an excellent reward, and we shall make things easy for him." 88 Then he set out on another expedition 89 until, when he reached the rising of the sun, he found it rising upon a people for whom We had not appointed any veil to shade them from it. 90 (He left them) as they were: We completely understood what was before him. 91 And once again he chose the right means [to achieve a right end]. 92 until he came between two mountains. He found beside them a people who could scarcely understand a word [of his language]. 93 They said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Gog and Magog are [great] corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier?" 94 He said, "What My Lord has given me is better [than any tribute]. Help me with a force of labourers and I will erect a barrier between you and them: 95 "Bring me blocks of iron." At length, when he had filled up the space between the two steep mountain-sides, He said, "Blow (with your bellows)" Then, when he had made it (red) as fire, he said: "Bring me, that I may pour over it, molten lead." 96 So they [Ya'juj and Ma'juj (Gog and Magog)] were made powerless to scale it or dig through it. 97 He said: This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord cometh to pass, He will lay it low, for the promise of my Lord is true. 98 ۞ We shall leave them on that day surging like waves pressing one against the other, and the trumpet blast will be sounded, when We shall gather them all together. 99 On that Day We shall present Gehenna (Hell) to the unbelievers, 100 whose eyes had been veiled against Our Quran and who were not able to hear (its recitation). 101
