The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I ask of you no wage therefor; my wage is the concern only of the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 “Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform.” 152 They said: "Surely you are deluded. 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 and do her no harm, lest suffering befall you on an awesome day!" 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
