The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment). 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 While we behold it nigh: 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 and [when] no friend will ask about his friend, 10 They will be seeing them; the guilty will wish if only he could redeem himself from the punishment of that day, by offering his sons. 11 his wife, his brother, 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right). 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Lo! man was created anxious, 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 And when good toucheth him he is begrudging. 21 Save worshippers. 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 who, from their wealth is a known right 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 who confirm the Day of Reckoning 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
