The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 Rise up and warn! 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 For when the trumpet shall sound, 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and sons standing before him, 13 And made (life) smooth for him. 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 Verily, he thought and plotted; 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 We have not appointed the guards of hell, except angels; and did not keep this number except to test the disbelievers – in order that the People given the Book(s) may be convinced, and to increase the faith of the believers – and so that the People given the Book(s) and the Muslims may not have any doubt – and so that those in whose hearts is a disease and the disbelievers, may say, “What does Allah mean by this amazing example?” This is how Allah sends astray whomever He wills, and guides whomever He wills; and no one knows the armies of Allah except Him; and this is not but an advice to man. 31
