The News (Al-Naba')
40 verses, revealed in Mecca after The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej) before The Snatchers (Al-Naze'aat)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ About what are they asking one another? 1 (It is) of the awful tidings, 2 About which they differ? 3 No indeed; soon will they come to know; 4 Nay, again, they will come to know! 5 Have We not spread the earth like a bed, 6 and fixed the mountains like pegs, 7 and created you in pairs (as men and women), 8 And We have made your sleep as a rest. 9 And made the night as clothing 10 And made the day for livelihood 11 And (have We not) built over you the seven firmaments, 12 And We made a shining lamp, 13 And We have sent down from the rain-clouds water plenteous. 14 That We may produce therewith corn and vegetations, 15 and gardens dense with foliage. 16 Surely the day of decision is (a day) appointed: 17 the Day when the trumpet [of resurrection] is sounded and you all come forward in multitudes; 18 And the heaven shall be opened, and it will become as gates, 19 And the mountains shall be moved away from their places and they will be as if they were a mirage. 20 Lo! hell lurketh in ambush, 21 a goal for all who are wont to transgress the bounds of what is right! 22 In which they will remain for ages [unending]. 23 Nothing cool shall they taste therein, nor any drink, 24 Except scalding water and [foul] purulence - 25 for a suitable recompense. 26 They indeed hoped not for a reckoning, 27 and they cried loud lies to Our signs; 28 but We have placed on record every single thing [of what they did]. 29 "So taste ye (the fruits of your deeds); for no increase shall We grant you, except in Punishment." 30
