Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn 1 by the Ten (secret) Nights, 2 And by the even and the odd (of all the creations of Allah). 3 The night as it advances, 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Have you not seen what your Lord did to the 'Ad 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 So they made great mischief therein? 12 Then their Lord unloosed upon them the lash of chastisement. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But when He tries him, by straitening his means of life, he says: "My Lord has humiliated me!" 16 Nay! but you do not honor the orphan, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And love wealth with all your heart. 20 When the earth is crushed into small pieces 21 and [the majesty of] thy Sustainer stands revealed, as well as [the true nature of] the angels; rank upon rank? 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He shall say, 'O would that I had forwarded for my life!' 24 Wherefore on that Day none shall torment with His torment. 25 and none can bind with bonds like His. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Join My worshipers and 29 Enter then My garden." 30
