Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Ha Mim 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 by Our own command -- We have been sending messages, 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 He is the Lord of heaven and earth and all that is between them, if only you would really believe, 7 There is no god but He: He gives life and causes death. He is your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers of yore. 8 (But the fact is, they lack certainty) and frolic about in doubt. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 But how will they take heed? Such are they that a Messenger came to them clearly expounding the Truth, 13 Yet they turned away from him and said: one tutored, one distraced. 14 We now remove the punishment for some days – so you will again commit the same. 15 The day when We will seize with the greatest seizure – We will indeed take revenge. 16 ۞ We had tried the people of Pharaoh before them. A respected prophet had come to them (saying): 17 "Give in unto me, O God's bondmen! Verily, I am an apostle [sent] unto you, worthy of trust! 18 and do not exalt yourselves in defiance of Allah. I have come to you with a clear authority (as a Messenger). 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 And if ye put no faith in me, then let me go. 21 And [finally] he called to his Lord that these were a criminal people. 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 "And leave the sea as a furrow (divided): for they are a host (destined) to be drowned." 24 They left - how many! of gardens and springs. 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they respited; 29
