The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes). 1 Your comrade erreth not, nor is deceived; 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It is no less than inspiration sent down to him: 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael - Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. 6 the strong one who appeared on the uppermost horizon. 7 Thereafter he drew nigh, then he let himself down. 8 until he was two bows' length away, or nearer. 9 And thus did [God] reveal unto His servant whatever He deemed right to reveal. 10 His heart added no untruth to what he saw. 11 Will you dispute with him what he saw? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 by the lote-tree at the farthest boundary, 14 Close to which is the Garden of Tranquility, 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you considered Lat and 'Uzza, 19 And another, the third (goddess), Manat? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 This indeed is an unjust division! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have whatever he fancies? 24 Rather, to Allah belongs the Hereafter and the first [life]. 25
