The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And uncleanliness avoid 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And for the good-will of thy Lord be thou patient. 7 Then when the horn shall be blown, 8 That, at that time, shall be a difficult day, 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave Me with him whom I created alone, 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And sons present by his side. 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 and who still greedily desires that I should bestow upon him more. 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 He reflected, and then determined 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 What an evil plan he has made! 20 Then looked he, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 and said, "This is nothing but sorcery from the ancients. 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Over it are Nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
