He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 So you are after him! 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 And hath fear, 9 From him you are distracted. 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 On honoured leaves 13 exalted and purified, 14 In the hands of scribes 15 noble, pious. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 From a (sperm) drop He created him and then determined him, 19 Then He eased the way for him; 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 So let man just consider his food: 24 That We pour down the water, pouring (it) down in abundance, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 And We cause therein the grain to grow, 27 And grapes and clover plants (i.e. green fodder for the cattle), 28 Olives and dates, 29 And thick gardens, 30 And fruits and herbage: 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 But when the deafening cry shall be sounded 33 On that day man will run away from his brother. 34 his mother, his father, 35 And his wife and his children, 36 Everyman, that Day, will have enough to make him careless of others. 37 On that day faces will be bright as dawn, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And many will be dust-begrimed, 40 enveloped by darkness. 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
