The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes). 1 Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; 2 And he speaketh not of his own desire. 3 It is but a revelation revealed. 4 Which one of mighty powers hath taught him, 5 One strong of make. Then he stood straight. 6 And he is in the highest part of the horizon. 7 Then he drew nigh and came down 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 So did (Allah) convey the Inspiration to His slave [Muhammad SAW through Jibrael (Gabriel)]. 10 His heart did not falsify what he perceived. 11 Will ye then dispute with him concerning what he saw? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 By the lote-tree of the utmost boundary, 14 Near it is the Garden of Refuge - 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray: 17 He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 What! for you the males and for Him the females! 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 They are but names which you have named, you and your fathers, for which Allah has sent down no authority. They follow but a guess and that which they themselves desire, whereas there has surely come to them the Guidance from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have whatever he fancies? 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
