The Town (Al-Balad)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Makkah); 1 And thou shalt be allowed in yonder city 2 And (the mystic ties of) parent and child;- 3 that We have created the human being to face a great deal of hardship. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent wealth in abundance." 6 Does he think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 How will you comprehend what the Steep ascent is? -- 12 [It is] the freeing of one's neck [from the burden of sin,] 13 Or feeding on a day of severe hunger 14 to an orphan near of kin 15 Or to a Miskin (poor) afflicted with misery. 16 And then being among those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion. 17 They are the people of the right hand (and will succeed). 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 Upon them is a fire, in which they are imprisoned, closed and shut above them. 20
