The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ I CALL THIS earth to witness -- 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 And the parent and the offspring, 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Does he, then, think that no one has power over him? 5 He says, "I have spent enormous wealth." 6 Does he then think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 And guide him to the parting of the mountain ways? 10 But he would not attempt the uphill road, 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 The freeing of a slave, 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 To an orphan, having relationship, 15 and downtrodden destitute person, (so that he would be of) 16 Then he is of those who believe and charge one another to show patience, and charge one another to show compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 And those who denied Our signs, are the people of the left. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
