Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn; 1 and ten nights (of pilgrimage or the last ten days of Ramadan), 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Dost thou not consider how thy Lord dealt with (the tribe of) A'ad, 6 Iram of the pillars, 7 whose like has never been created in any other land. 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 [All of] whom oppressed within the lands 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 Wherefore thy Lord poured on them the scourge of His torment. 13 surely thy Lord is ever on the watch. 14 BUT AS FOR man, whenever his Sustainer tries him by His generosity and by letting him enjoy a life of ease, he says, "My Sustainer has been [justly] generous towards me"; 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 And urge not on the feeding of the poor. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 No! But when the earth quakes and is pounded, 21 And thy Lord cometh, and His angels, rank upon rank, 22 On that day, hell will be brought closer and the human being will come to his senses, but this will be of no avail to him. 23 He shall say: O! would that I had sent before for (this) my life! 24 None can punish as He will punish on that day, 25 none shall bind as He binds. 26 O soul that art at rest! 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him], 28 Then enter the ranks of My chosen bondmen! 29 Enter then My garden." 30
