a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then indeed you, O those astray [who are] deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Have ye seen that which ye cultivate? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 If We will, We would make it bitter, why then do you not give thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Did you make its tree grow or was it We Who made it grow? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
