Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 And ten nights, 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 And by the night when it departeth, 4 Truly in that there is an oath for those who possess understanding. 5 Have you not seen how your Lord dealt with Ad 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The likes of whom had never been created in the land? 8 and with the Thamud, who cut out [huge] rocks in the valley, 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And multiplied corruption. 12 Therefore your Lord let down upon them a portion of the chastisement. 13 indeed, your Lord is ever watchful. 14 So man, whenever his Lord tests him by giving him honour and favours – thereupon he says, “My Lord has honoured me.” 15 But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 And do not urge one another to feed the needy. 18 And devour the inheritance devouring greedily, 19 and you have a love of wealth which can never be satisfied. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 and Gehenna (Hell) is brought near on that Day the human will remember, and how shall the Reminder be for him? 23 He will say: "Alas! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my life!" 24 So on that Day, none will punish as He will punish. 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 [To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 Join My servants. 29 and enter My Paradise.” 30
