Al-Alaq

The Embryo (Al-Alaq)

19 verses, revealed in Mecca. First revelation of the Quran before The Pen (Al-Qalam)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created, 1 created man from a clot [of blood]. 2 Recite thou: And thy Lord is the Most Bounteous, 3 The One Who taught to write with the pen. 4 Taught man what he did not know. 5 Yet man behaves arrogantly, 6 For he thinks he is sufficient in himself. 7 for, behold, unto thy Sustainer all must return. 8 Have you seen one who prevents 9 a servant (of Allah) when he prays? 10 Do you think he is rightly guided, 11 He would enjoin piety, so how good it would be! 12 Tell me if he (the disbeliever, Abu Jahl) denies (the truth, i.e. this Quran), and turns away? 13 Is he then unaware that Allah seeth? 14 Nay, but if he cease not We will seize him by the forelock - 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 Then, let him call his assembly, 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 Nay! obey him not, and make obeisance and draw nigh (to Allah). ۩ 19
