And they ask you about Dhul-Qarnain. Say: "I shall recite to you something of his story." 83 Indeed We gave him authority in the land and bestowed him the means of everything. 84 and so he chose the right means [in whatever he did]. 85 To the extent that when he reached the setting-place of the sun, he found it setting in a muddy spring, and found a nation there; We said, “O Zul-Qarnain – either punish them or choose kindness for them.” 86 He said: As to him who is unjust, we will chastise him, then shall he be returned to his Lord, and He will chastise him with an exemplary chastisement: 87 And as for him who believeth and worketh righteously, unto him shall be a goodly hire, and anon we shall speak unto him of our affair something easy. 88 He then followed (another) road 89 Till he reached the point of the rising sun, and saw it rise over a people for whom We had provided no shelter against it. 90 (He left them) as they were: We completely understood what was before him. 91 He then followed (another) road 92 until he came between two mountains. He found beside them a people who could scarcely understand a word [of his language]. 93 They said: 'O Dhu'l-Qarnain, Gog and Magog are oppressing the land. May we pay you some tribute so that you could build a rampart between us and them?" 94 He answered: "That wherein my Sustainer has so securely established me is better [than anything that you could give me]; hence, do but help me with [your labour's] strength, [and] I shall erect a rampart between you and them! 95 Bring me lumps of iron. Then when he had evened up between the two mountain-sides, he said: blow! Then when he had made it fire, he said: bring me and I shall pour thereon molten copper. 96 Such was the rampart that Gog and Magog could not scale, nor could they pierce it. 97 [Dhul-Qarnayn] said, "This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord comes, He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true." 98 ۞ On that Day, We shall let them surge against each other like waves and then the Trumpet will be blown and We shall gather them all together. 99 And We will present Hell that Day to the Disbelievers, on display - 100 whose eyes had become blind against My admonition and who were utterly disinclined to hear it. 101
