a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a numerous company from among the last. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 which will neither be cool nor soothing. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 shall eat the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 nay, we have been robbed!' 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Consider the fire that you strike (and get by friction). 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
