The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 Arise and warn, 2 And thine Lord magnify! 3 And keep your clothes clean. 4 And keep away from Ar-Rujz (the idols)! 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 And for the sake of your Lord, patiently endure. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 not an easy day for the unbelievers. 10 Let Me alone with him whom I created lonely. 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Indeed, he thought and deliberated. 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 And again perish he! How maliciously he devised! 20 Then he beheld, 21 And frowned and puckered his brow, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 'this is nothing but mortal speech.' 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It leaves and spares no one and nothing. 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen (angels guarding). 30 We have appointed only angels to be masters of the Fire, and their number We have appointed only as a trial for the unbelievers, that those who were given the Book may have certainty, and that those who believe may increase in belief, and that those who were given the Book and those who believe may not be in-doubt, and that those in whose hearts there is sickness, and the unbelievers, may say, 'What did God intend by this as a similitude?' So God leads astray whomsoever He will, and He guides whomsoever He will; and none knows the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but a Reminder to mortals. 31
