The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 and the moon as it reflects the sun! 2 And [by] the day when it displays it 3 The night when it covers him over, 4 And by the heaven and Him Who built it; 5 by the earth and Who spread it, 6 The soul and how it was integrated 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 He who purifies it will indeed be successful, 9 And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it. 10 Samood gave the lie (to the truth) in their inordinacy, 11 when the most wicked of them broke forth, 12 The Messenger of God told them, "This is a she-camel, belonging to God. Do not deprive her of her share of water". 13 But they gave him the lie, and cruelly slaughtered her - whereupon their Sustainer visited them with utter destruction for this their sin, destroying them all alike: 14 He does not fear the consequence. 15
