Jonah, too, was one of the Messengers. 139 when he ran away to the laden ship 140 And he drew lots and was among the losers. 141 Then he was swallowed by a large fish as he was worthy of blame. 142 Had it not been that he (repented and) glorified Allah, 143 He would certainly have tarried in its belly to the day when they are raised. 144 ۞ But We threw him on a wide bare tract of land while he was ill; 145 and caused a creeping plant to grow over him [out of the barren soil]. 146 And We sent him towards a hundred thousand people, in fact more. 147 And they came to believe; so We allowed them to enjoy the good things of life for an age. 148 Then ask them whether your Lord has daughters and they have sons. 149 Or that We created the angels female, and they are witnesses (thereto)? 150 Verily, it is of their falsehood that they (Quraish pagans) say: 151 "Allah has begotten off spring or children (i.e. angels are the daughters of Allah)?" And, verily, they are liars! 152 Has He chosen daughters over sons? 153 “What is the matter with you? What sort of a judgement you impose!” 154 “So do you not ponder?” 155 Or have you received some clear authority? 156 Then bring your scripture, if what you say is true. 157 And they imagine kinship between him and the jinn, whereas the jinn know well that they will be brought before (Him). 158 God is far above what they attribute to Him, 159 Except the chosen bondmen of Allah. 160 for, verily, neither you [blasphemers] nor the objects of your worship 161 Ye cannot excite (anyone) against Him. 162 Except one who is (destined) to burn in Hell. 163 "There is not one of us who does not have his appointed place," (declare the angels.) 164 Lo! we, even we are they who set the ranks, 165 and, verily, we too extol His limitless glory!" 166 What, would they then say: 167 "If we had had with us a Book like that of the people of old, 168 Surely we would have been the bondmen of God sincere. 169 And yet, [now that this divine writ has been placed before them,] they refuse to acknowledge it as true! In time, however, they will come to know [what it was that they had rejected]: 170 And indeed Our Word has already gone forth for Our bondmen who were sent. 171 That they would be helped, 172 And that Our forces,- they surely must conquer. 173 So, [O Muhammad], leave them for a time. 174 Watch them: they will soon see. 175 Our torment seek they to hasten on! 176 But then, once it alights upon them, hapless will be the awakening of those who were warned [to no avail]! 177 So turn thou away from them for a little while, 178 And wait, for they will soon see. 179 Purity is to your Lord, the Lord of Honour, from all what they say. 180 And peace is upon the Noble Messengers. 181 And all praise is to Allah, the Lord Of The Creation. 182
