A multitude of those of old 39 and many from the later generations. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 [They will be] in scorching fire and scalding water 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 They had been affluent before, 45 and would persist in heinous sinning, 46 And they used to say, "When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?" 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 You shall drink it as the thirsty camels drink." 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Requital. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Just consider the semen that you emit, 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 From replacing you with others or raising you in a way you do not know. 61 And [since] you are indeed aware of the [miracle of your] coming into being in the first instance - why, then, do you not bethink yourselves [of Us]? 62 Ponder upon the soil you till, 63 Is it you who cause them to grow or do We? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Tell Me! The water that you drink. 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it a reminder, and a blessing to the traveler. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
