A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients' 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then lo! ye, the erring, the deniers, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We so wished, We could have reduced your harvest to rubble, and you would have been left wonder-struck to exclaim: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 Were it Our Will, We could make it salt (and unpalatable): then why do ye not give thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
