Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha-Mim. [These letters are one of the miracles of the Quran and none but Allah (Alone) knows their meanings]. 1 By the Scripture that maketh plain 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 There is no god other than He, who gives you life and death, your Lord and the Lord of your fathers of old. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 (People will then say): “Our Lord, remove this scourge from us; we shall believe.” 12 How shall they be reminded, and there came to them an Apostle making clear (the truth), 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 'Behold, We are removing the chastisement a little; behold, you revert!' 15 The Day when We shall seize them with a mighty seizing, that will be the Day on which We shall inflict upon you full retribution. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 Saying: "Restore to me the Servants of Allah: I am to you an messenger worthy of all trust; 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 And verily I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord lest ye stone me. 20 And if you do not believe in me, then leave me alone. 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 [Allah said], "Then set out with My servants by night. Indeed, you are to be pursued. 23 And leave thou the sea divided: verily they are a host to be drowned. 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus it was; and We passed them on to another people. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
