The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn, 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 That Day will be a difficult day 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 Leave Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 And sons dwelling in his presence, 13 I made things smooth and easy for him, 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Lo! He reflected, and determined -- 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 Then he looked round; 21 Then he frowned and he scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 I will soon fling him into hell. 26 And what do you know what Hell is? 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 Blackening the skins. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
