Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the dawn, 1 And the ten nights, 2 And the Even and the Odd, 3 And the night when it departs. 4 Is there (not) in these an adjuration (or evidence) for those who understand? 5 Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with 'Aad - 6 the people of the huge columned city of Eram 7 The like of which was not built in the cities, 8 And with (the tribe of) Thamud, who clove the rocks in the valley; 9 And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes? - 10 They were tyrants in the land 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 No. In fact you are not generous to the orphans, 17 And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor. 18 And you devour inheritance all with greed, 19 and love the riches, loving them ardently. 20 Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding, 21 And thy Lord shall come with angels, rank on rank, 22 and Hell is made to appear on that Day, then man will be mindful, but what will being mindful then avail him? 23 He will say: 'Would that I had forwarded (good works) for my life!' 24 So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment, 25 None bindeth as He then will bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 Join My servants. 29 Enter then My garden." 30
