The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 The angels and the Spirit will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years. 4 So be patient with gracious patience. 5 Surely they think it to be far off, 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The Day that the sky will be like the boiling filth of oil, (or molten copper or silver or lead, etc.). 8 And then the mountains shall become like unto wool dyed. 9 And no friend will ask concerning his friend. 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And his kindred who sheltered him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 But not so the worshippers 22 and constant in their prayers. 23 They are those who assign a certain share of their property 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 and are fearful of the punishment of their Lord; 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 who guard their privates 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 and who stand firm whenever they bear witness; 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 It is these who will be honoured in Gardens. 35
