He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 What made you think that he will not grow in virtue, 3 Or take heed and so the reminder might avail him? 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 To him you give attention. 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 and in awe of God 9 From him thou art distracted. 10 Assuredly this is a reminder 11 and whosoever wills, shall remember it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 lofty and pure, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 Noble and dutiful. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 Of a drop of seed. He created him and formed him according to a measure. 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 Then, when He will, He bringeth him again to life. 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 We poured down rain abundantly, 25 and let the earth to break open 26 to yield therein corn, 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 and olive trees and date palms 29 the densely tree'd gardens, 30 fruits, and grass. 31 A provision for you and for your cattle. 32 When the trumpet sounds, 33 upon the day when a man shall flee from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 As well as his wife and children. 36 Each one of them, that Day, will have enough concern (of his own) to make him indifferent to the others. 37 Some faces that Day will be beaming, 38 laughing, joyous; 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 Such will be the Rejecters of Allah, the doers of iniquity. 42
