The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 And the day when it shines in all its glory, 2 And by Who created the male and female, 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and affirmed the Truth of goodness: 6 We will facilitate for him the easy end. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We shall pave his way to hardship, 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 none shall enter it but the most wicked, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And is under no one's obligation to return his favour, 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 and such, indeed, shall in time be well-pleased. 21
