The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who hath created 1 He created man from a clot of blood. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Bountiful One 3 The One Who taught to write with the pen. 4 taught man what he did not know. 5 Nay, verily, man becomes grossly overweening 6 As he considers himself independent! 7 Verily unto thy Lord is the return. 8 Hast thou seen him who dissuadeth 9 a servant of Ours from prayer? 10 Hast thou seen if he relieth on the guidance (of Allah) 11 and enjoins piety? 12 Seest thou if he denies (Truth) and turns away? 13 Knoweth he not that Allah doth see? 14 By no means! If he desist not We shall seize and deal him by the forelock 15 a lying, sinful forelock. 16 and then let him summon [to his aid] the counsels of his own [spurious] wisdom, 17 We shall call on the guards of Hell. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
