He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 And what do you know, he may be of the pure! 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for he who thinks himself without need, 5 Unto him thou payest regard. 6 And you have nothing to lose if he does not become pure. 7 But as to him who came to thee striving earnestly, 8 And he fears, 9 of him you were unmindful. 10 By no means! Verily it is an admonition. 11 So let whosoever will pay heed to it, 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted (in dignity), purified, 14 By the hands of scribes. 15 noble and purified. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 From a drop of liquid; He created him and then set several measures for him. 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 then He caused him to die and brought him to the grave, 21 Then when He pleases, He will bring him back to life. 22 Not one – he has not yet completed what he was commanded. 23 Then let man look at his food, (and how We provide it): 24 How We pour water in showers 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 And We made corn grow, 27 And grapes and herbage 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 and gardens dense with foliage, 30 And fruits and grass, 31 as provision for you and for your cattle to enjoy. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 his mother, his father, 35 and from his spouse and his children: 36 for on that day everyone will be completely engrossed in his own concerns. 37 Faces on that Day shall be beaming, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And other faces, that Day, will be dust-stained; 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
