Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim 1 By the Clear Book. 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 on that night every wise decree is specified 4 [Every] matter [proceeding] from Us. Indeed, We were to send [a messenger] 5 as a mercy (for the human being) from your Lord. Your Lord is All-hearing and All-knowing. 6 Lord of the heavens and earth, and all that between them is if you have faith. 7 La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). It is He Who gives life and causes death, your Lord and the Lord of your fore-fathers. 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 WAIT, THEN, for the Day when the skies shall bring forth a pall of smoke which will make obvious [the approach of the Last Hour,] 10 Covering the people, this shall be a torment afflictive. 11 (Then they will say): Our Lord relieve us of the torment. Lo! we are believers. 12 How could this punishment bring them to their senses when a Messenger evidently had come to them, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Yet We will hold the scourge back for a while, (but no sooner than We will do so) you will revert to your old ways. 15 Upon the day when We shall assault most mightily, then We shall take Our vengeance. 16 ۞ And certainly We tried before them the people of Firon, and there came to them a noble apostle, 17 (and said): “Deliver to me Allah's servants. I am a trustworthy Messenger to you, 18 "And exalt not yourselves against God: for, verily, I come unto you with a manifest authority [from Him]; 19 I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me. 20 "If ye believe me not, at least keep yourselves away from me." 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 So depart thou with My bondmen by night; verily ye shall be pursued. 23 And leave the sea becalmed; they are a drowned host.' 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And green crops (fields etc.) and goodly places, 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 And the heaven and the earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
