The Thamud accused the messengers of lies. 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 "I am a trustworthy Messenger to you. 143 "So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left secure in this here, 146 Within gardens and springs 147 And fields of crops and palm trees with softened fruit? 148 hewing out houses in the mountains and taking pride in your skill? 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 and pay no heed to the counsel of those who are given to excesses 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: thou art but one of the bewitched; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: 'Here is a shecamel. She shall have her share of water as you have yours on an appointed day. 155 Do not molest her lest the chastisement of an Awesome Day should seize you." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and in the morning they were remorseful, 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 And indeed, your Lord - He is the Exalted in Might, the Merciful. 159
