The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
CONSIDER the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 As for him who gives and is godfearing 5 for those who spend for the cause of God, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Easing. 7 And as for him who stinteth and is heedless, 8 and denied the Truth of goodness: 9 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Misery; 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 None shall reach it but those most unfortunate ones 15 Who belieth and turneth away. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
