The Thamud belied the sent ones 141 When their brother Salih said unto them: fear ye not? 142 I am for you an honest Messenger. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 You hew dwellings in mountains and exult in that. 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: "Here is a she-camel: she has a right of watering, and ye have a right of watering, (severally) on a day appointed. 155 Do not cause her to suffer lest you become subject to the torment of the great day (of Judgment)." 156 Yet they hamstrung her, and then they became regretful: 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 And verily thy Lord! He is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
