Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim! 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 surely We sent it down on a blessed night, We have always sent warnings, 3 Whereon every wise command is made clear 4 The command that We have been sending 5 A mercy from your Lord. Verily He is all-hearing and all-knowing, 6 the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them - if you could but grasp it with inner certainty! 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 yet, they toy with their doubts. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 "O Lord, take away this torment from us," (they will pray); "we have come to believe." 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 whereupon they turned their backs on him and said, "Taught [by others] is he, a madman"? 14 Verily, We shall remove the torment for a while. Verily! You will revert. 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ Already before them We tried the people of Pharaoh, and a noble Messenger came unto them, 17 saying, "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. 18 Do not rise up against Allah, I come to you with clear authority. 19 And indeed, I have sought refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me. 20 “And if you do not believe in me, then have no relation with me.” 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave the sea in stillness. Indeed, they are an army to be drowned." 24 How many of gardens and springs do they [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people] left. 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 and what prosperity they had rejoiced in! 27 Thus it was. And [then] We made another people heirs [to what they had left,] 28 Neither heaven nor earth wept for them, nor were they allowed any respite. 29
