a good many of olden times, 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 The Companions of the Left (O Companions of the Left!) 41 Will be in the scorching wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 and thereupon you shall drink boiling water, 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Then tell Me (about) the human semen that you emit. 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have you considered what you sow? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Did We will, We would make it broken orts, and you would remain bitterly jesting -- 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you thought about the water you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you that produce the trees for it, or are We the producers? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Therefore glorify the name of your Lord, the Great. 74
