۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 When he said to his father and his people: What are these images to whose worship you cleave? 52 They said, “We found our forefathers worshipping them.” 53 Said he: "Indeed, you and your forefathers have obviously gone astray!" 54 They said, 'What, hast thou come to us with the truth, or art thou one of those that play?' 55 He said: Nay, but your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth, Who created them; and I am of those who testify unto that. 56 And, by Allah, I shall circumvent your idols after ye have gone away and turned your backs. 57 So he broke them into pieces, except the chief of them, that haply they may return to it. 58 (When they saw the idols in this state) they said: "Who has done this to our gods? Surely he is one of the wrong-doers." 59 They said, "We heard a youth talk of them: He is called Abraham." 60 They said: Then bring him (hither) before the people's eyes that they may testify. 61 [And when he came.] they asked: "Hast thou done this to our gods, O Abraham?" 62 He said: But this, their chief hath done it. So question them, if they can speak. 63 So they returned one to another saying, 'Surely, it is you who are the harmdoers' 64 But then they relapsed into their former way of thinking and said: "Thou knowest very well that these [idols] cannot speak!" 65 Said [Abraham]: "Do you then worship, instead of God, something that cannot benefit you in any way, nor harm you? 66 Shame on you and on whatever you worship instead of God. Can you not understand?" 67 They said: "Burn him, and save your gods, if you are men of action." 68 We said, 'O fire, be coolness and safety for Abraham!' 69 And they wanted to harm him, but We made them the worst losers. 70 So We delivered him and Lot, and brought them to the land We had blessed for all the people. 71 And We bestowed upon him Isaac and Jacob as an additional gift, making each of them righteous. 72 and made them leaders who would guide [others] in accordance with Our behest: for We inspired them [with a will] to do good works, and to be constant in prayer, and to dispense charity: and Us [alone] did they worship. 73 And We gave Lut the kingdom and knowledge, and We rescued him from the township that committed vile deeds; indeed those evil people were disobedient. 74 And We caused him to enter into Our mercy; verily he was of the righteous. 75
