The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the sun and its noon-time brightness, 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 And by oath of the night when it hides it 4 By the heaven and That which built it 5 And by oath of the earth and by oath of Him Who spread it. 6 and by the soul and by Him Who perfectly proportioned it, 7 and inspired it with knowledge of evil and piety, 8 He will indeed be successful who purifies it, 9 And he has failed who instills it [with corruption]. 10 In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie 11 when the most wretched of them uprose, 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 But they gave him the lie, and cruelly slaughtered her - whereupon their Sustainer visited them with utter destruction for this their sin, destroying them all alike: 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
