A throng of the ancients 39 And a large group from the latter. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cold nor graceful in shape. 44 They were endowed with good things 45 And used to persist in the awful sin. 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 and you shall fill therewith your bellies 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 Such will be their welcome on Judgment Day! 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have you thought about [the semen] that you discharge -- 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Nay, but we are deprived! 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Tell Me! The fire which you kindle, 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
