The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
One demanding, demanded the chastisement which must befall 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore endure with a goodly patience. 5 They see it [the Day of Judgement] to be far off, 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 The mountains like the tufts of (carded) wool, 9 And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend, 10 (Though) they shall be made to see each other. The guilty one would fain redeem himself from the chastisement of that day by (sacrificing) his children, 11 And his wife and his brother 12 his kin who sheltered him, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 Never! That is indeed a blazing fire. 15 stripping away his skin, 16 It shall insistently summon him who turned his back and retreated, 17 and who accumulated wealth without spending it for a good purpose. 18 ۞ Surely man is greedy by nature. 19 Being greatly grieved when evil afflicts him 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 Who are constant at their worship 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgment, 26 And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord - 27 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;- 28 who guard their carnal desires 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who of their trusts and their covenant are keepers. 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 These will dwell in Gardens, honoured. 35
