The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the sun and its brightness 1 And the moon when she followeth him, 2 The day when it reveals his radiance, 3 and by the night as it envelopes the sun; 4 by the sky and how He built it 5 And the earth and Him Who spread it, 6 and by the soul and by Him Who perfectly proportioned it, 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 He who nourishes it will surely be successful, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 TO [THIS] TRUTH gave the lie, in their overweening arrogance, [the tribe of] Thamud, 11 When among them the great wretch arose, 12 Then the apostle of Allah said unto them: beware of the she-camel of Allah and her drink. 13 But they cried him lies, and hamstrung her, so their Lord crushed them for their sin, and leveled them: 14 And He (Allah) feared not the consequences thereof. 15
