The Embryo (Al-Alaq)

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Recite thou in the name of thy Lord Who hath created 1 created man out of a germ-cell 2 Recite! Your Lord is the most Honorable One, 3 Who taught by the pen, 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 Nay, but man doth transgress all bounds, 6 That he thinketh himself independent! 7 Indeed, to your Lord is the return. 8 Did you see him who forbids 9 a servant when he prays -- 10 Bethinkest thou, if he is himself guided, 11 Or had enjoined piety, (it would have been better)? 12 What is your opinion – if he denies and turns away, how wretched will be his state! 13 Knoweth he not that Allah beholdeth? 14 And yet indeed if he does not desist We shall drag him by the forelock, 15 A forelock, lying, sinning. 16 So, let him call upon his way! 17 and We too will call the stern and angry keepers of hell. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
