He Frowned ('Abasa)
Allah - beginning with the name of - the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ The Prophet frowned and turned away 1 when the blind came to him. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 Now he who waxes indifferent, 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 And he who comes to thee eagerly 8 And is afraid (of Allah and His Punishment), 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 No indeed; it is a Reminder 11 Therefore let whoso will, keep it in remembrance. 12 It is contained in scrolls highly honoured, 13 uplifted, purified, 14 [borne] by the hands of messengers 15 and angelic scribes. 16 [But only too often] man destroys himself: how stubbornly does he deny the truth! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 Then eased the way for him. 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 Then, when it is His Will, He will resurrect him (again). 22 Certainly, he has not duly fulfilled His commands. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 and cleaved the earth, cleaving it asunder; 26 And caused to grow within it grain 27 together with grapes and vegetables, 28 olives, dates, 29 and dense-tree'd gardens, 30 and fruit and pastures, 31 an enjoyment for you and your flocks. 32 AND SO, when the piercing call [of resurrection] is heard 33 Man will fly from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 And his wife and his children, 36 For every one of them on that Day shall be business enough to occupy 37 Some faces will shine, 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And [other] faces, that Day, will have upon them dust. 40 and covered by darkness. 41 It is they, the disbelievers, the sinners. 42
