(The tribe of) Thamud denied the messengers (of Allah) 141 When their brother Salih said to them: Will you not guard (against evil)? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 so fear God and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 And tilled fields and heavy-sheathed palm-trees, 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who work corruption in the land and rectify not. 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 You are only a human being like ourselves. Show us a sign, if you are telling the truth." 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they ham-strung her: then did they become full of regrets. 157 So the chastisement seized them. Surely there is a Sign in this, but most of them would not believe. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
