He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
۞ (The Prophet) frowned and turned away, 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? 4 Yet you pay attention 5 To him do you address yourself. 6 And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. 7 And for him who came to you striving, 8 While he fears [Allah], 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 So whosoever willeth - let him be admonished therewlth. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 exalted, purified, 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 Honourable and obedient. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 Of what [stuff] has He created him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 then eased his path for him, 20 Then gave him death, so had him put in the grave. 21 Then when He pleases, He will raise him to life again. 22 Nay, but (man) hath not done what He commanded him. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 We poured out the rains abundantly, 25 And We split the earth in clefts, 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And enclosed gardens luxuriant. 30 And fruits and grass, 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 Then, when there comes As-Sakhkhah (the Day of Resurrection's second blowing of Trumpet), 33 it will be such a day when a person will run away from his brother, 34 his mother and his father, 35 and his consort and his children; 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 Many a face will be glittering on that day. 38 laughing, and rejoicing, 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Blackness overcoming them. 41 those -- they are the unbelievers, the libertines. 42
