The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the Night as it conceals (the light); 1 and by the day as it appears radiantly, 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Your striving is most surely (directed to) various (ends). 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 We will make smooth for him the path of ease (goodness). 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 and rejects what is right, 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 [the fire] which none shall have to endure but that most hapless wretch 15 Who had denied and turned away. 16 and from which the cautious shall be distanced. 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 Except only the desire to seek the Countenance of his Lord, the Most High; 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
