Thamud (people) belied the Messenger. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 and spread mischief in the land rather than set things right." 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 They slew the she-camel, but later became regretful 157 But the Penalty seized them. Verily in this is a Sign: but most of them do not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
