And verily We sent Moses with Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of the Lord of the Worlds. 46 But when he came to them with Our Signs, behold they ridiculed them. 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 'Sorcerer' they said, 'pray to your Lord for us in accordance to the covenant He has made with you, and surely we shall be rightly guided' 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, behold, they broke their troth. 50 And Fir'awn proclaimed among his people, saying: O my people! is not mine the dominion of Misr and witness yonder rivers flowing underneath me? See ye not? 51 Aye! I am better than this one who is despicable, and well-nigh cannot make himself plain. 52 "Then why are not gold bracelets bestowed on him, or (why) come (not) with him angels accompanying him in procession?" 53 He incited his people to levity and they obeyed him. Surely they were an iniquitous people. 54 But when they roused Our anger We inflicted retributive punishment and drowned them all, 55 And We made them a precedent and an ensample unto those after. 56
